THE Cake SMASH PREP GUIDE

A baby smashing a cake is just the sweetest thing ever! To make your cake smash photo shoot a success, let me share some tips from my experience as a DFW photographer.

Upon arriving, we will give your little one time to adjust to the new space. Every child will be unsure at first, as they are in a new place. Rushing a child, will only cause things to be worse!

Once baby is comfortable, we will start with personality portraits (if that is an option in your package chosen), and then we will do cake smash photos, proceeding with the bath at the end. You are welcome to dress baby upon arrival!

I will have music, and toys to help with getting your little one's attention! Do not get frustrated if they come in the studio not wanting to take photos right away. They will warm up to me after time!!! The calmer you are, the calmer they will be.

If you choose my sweet pea package, it will come with a smash cake that flows with the setup I create for your little one. I am co-parterned with a local bakery, that will provide a vanilla cake. If your child has known allergies, you will need to provide your own cake.

If providing your own cake, I prefer a vanilla cake with white icing. Chocolate can be a bit overhwelming color wise and the flavor sometimes is too rich for your little ones. Size wise, a 6-12" cake is normally best. I think the 6" ones are perfect personally!

Make sure the cake is room tempature before the smash. A cold cake is harder for the child to smash and is less appealing for the child to smash. You can pull it out if the fridge a couple hours before.

Pick something cute, but something you don't care about getting stained. There is always an option to go topless! The cutest thing is bare baby skin! In addition, it is recommended that bare feet be worn, as shoes will get messy when icing gets on them. Cleaning bare skin is easier, and that's always a good thing!

Don't forget to try the outfit on before the shoot and make any necessary adjustments. Despite the cuteness of overalls and baby straps, if they don't stay up on the baby's shoulder, your photos might be troublesome.

You can count on your kid getting messy! There will be a mess everywhere they touch after the smash. I will have water and paper towels for quick clean up, but bringing your own wipes is not a bad idea for a quick grab! Bring a change of clothes for your little one and maybe you too. A towel is needed if your package includes a splash bath at the end.

CAN I BRING SIBLINGS OR FAMILY MEMBERS?

It is only reccomended to bring either your spouse or 1 family member to the session. My studio space is small, and I would not have the seating area to accommodate several family members. You can come just you as well! Whoever gets your little one to smile the most!

This is only natural and doesn't tend to last the entire session. Usually taking breaks in between photos helps little one's not get overwhelmed. The smash cake and splash bath are usually the little's favorite part! So if we do not get smiles for the personality, we usually will with one of the others.

Your proof images will be ready for viewing within 3 business days of your session. Once chosen favorites, I will have final edited gallery within 2 weeks.

Any additional images are $15 per image. You will have the option to fully upgrade the gallery for a flat fee.

It has happened before and it will happen again many times so it really isn't a problem and you don't need to feel guilty! That is what the change of clothes for you and baby are for just in case!

I do not mine you videoing your little one smashing their cake for the first time, but please put your phone away during the remainder of the session. This is what you are paying a professional to do :)
